National Team Secures Comeback Draw, Leads Group Nine
The Algerian national football team successfully achieved a 2-2 draw against Burundi on Tuesday in the second round of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite falling two goals behind in the first half, the team displayed strong resolve to equalize and subsequently maintain its position at the top of Group Nine.
The match began with challenges for Algeria, as Burundi took an early lead in the fifth minute through an own goal by Farès Chaïbi. Burundi extended their advantage in the 12th minute when Giromugisha scored. Algeria responded in the 30th minute, with Mohamed Belloumi seizing an opportunity inside the penalty area to score with a left-footed shot, reducing the deficit to 2-1 before the halftime whistle.
Algeria pressed for an equalizer in the second half, making several strategic changes to their front line. Their efforts paid off in the 63rd minute when Adel Boulbina converted a free-kick with a precise strike, leveling the score. Despite additional attempts from players like Saadi Redouani and Jaouen Hadjam in the closing stages, the score remained unchanged, thanks in part to a crucial late save by Algerian goalkeeper Melvin Mastel against a header from Emmanuel Swedi.
With this hard-fought draw, Algeria now has four points after two rounds of matches, securing its lead in Group Nine of the qualifiers. Burundi collected its first point, placing third pending the outcome of the match between Zambia and Togo, as Algeria continues its campaign towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
