Nigerien Defense Minister, Algeria Fortify Security Partnership

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, received the Minister of State, Minister of National Defense of the Republic of Niger, General Salifou Modi, in Algiers. The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, October 13, included a significant Nigerien delegation and key Algerian officials such as General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the People's National Army, and Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. The discussions underscore a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the neighboring states.

The high-level engagement reflects a mutual desire to consolidate mechanisms for cooperation, particularly in defense and security. Both Algeria and Niger confront common challenges related to security, stability, and border management within the broader Sahel region. General Modi had earlier met with General Chanegriha at the People's National Army General Staff headquarters to review bilateral military cooperation and exchange perspectives on matters of mutual interest.

The convergence between Algiers and Niamey holds strategic importance in a Sahel region facing complex threats, including terrorism, armed banditry, and cross-border trafficking. Coordination efforts are specifically directed towards enhancing border security, facilitating intelligence sharing, and combating armed groups that exploit the vast desert expanses and transit routes connecting northern Niger and southern Algeria. This reinforces an Algero-Nigerien strategic partnership, positioning the stability of the Sahel at the forefront of both capitals' diplomatic and military priorities.
