Record 2026 Cereal Yields Prompt Agriculture Sector Meeting

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered the preparation of a dedicated Council of Ministers meeting focusing on the agricultural sector. This decision followed a comprehensive presentation on the outcomes of the 2026 cereal harvest campaign, which was characterized as exceptional. Authorities had projected a record yield of over 5 million tonnes of cereals for this campaign, marking the highest level in several years.

A significant highlight of the 2026 campaign is the achievement of self-sufficiency in durum wheat, an announcement previously made by President Tebboune on July 28. This accomplishment underscores the nation's progress in enhancing food security and reducing reliance on external sources for this vital commodity. The President's close monitoring of the agriculture portfolio has been consistent, with previous directives aimed at strengthening the sector's performance.

Past measures ordered by the Council of Ministers, under the President's guidance, include the implementation of a monthly bulletin for cereal production to be overseen by local authorities, as well as the immediate digitization of payments for harvests through the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office (OAIC). Furthermore, President Tebboune has advocated for a more effective agricultural orientation law designed to align cultivated land areas with the country's specific annual crop requirements, aiming for sustained growth and efficiency within the sector.
