Reform Efforts Span Customs Digitalization, Global Forums

Algerian Customs is actively engaged in a multifaceted agenda encompassing economic reform, advanced digitalization, efforts to combat disinformation, and enhanced international cooperation. The General Directorate of Customs recently underscored its commitment to accurate public information, notably on October 19, by refuting a circulating document on social media concerning alleged fraud in the importation of used vehicles less than three years old. This action aimed to guide citizens and economic operators to official channels for verifying information, thereby preventing confusion regarding automobile import regulations.
On the legislative front, Director General of Customs, Abdelhafid Bakhouche, presented before the finance and budget committee of the National People's Assembly as part of the review for the 2027 Finance Bill. Key discussions centered on the digitization of customs procedures, the implementation of a single-window system, and measures to reduce customs clearance times. These initiatives aim to streamline commercial operations, combat tax fraud, and ensure the preservation of public revenues. Deputies also addressed critical concerns such as port congestion, cybersecurity, and the protection of personal data, with all proposed measures pending the ongoing legislative process.
Further extending its strategic engagement, Algerian Customs participated in the 173rd session of the World Forum for Customs Questions concerning Transport (WP.30) in Geneva on October 7. This international forum focused on crucial topics including the TIR Convention, data exchange protocols, and the simplification of border crossings. Such participation highlights Algeria's commitment to developing cooperation with international partners and streamlining the global transport of goods, which are vital for enhancing trade efficiency and facilitating economic exchange.
