Sonatrach Progresses Toward Near-Zero Methane Emissions by 2030

Sonatrach, Algeria's national oil company, is working to achieve near-zero routine gas flaring and significantly reduce methane emissions by the year 2030. This ambitious target was confirmed by Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab during his opening address at the 14th edition of the Energy and Hydrogen Exhibition and Conference for Africa and the Mediterranean Basin, NAPEC 2026, held in Oran.

Significant progress has already been made towards these environmental goals. The volume of gas flared by Sonatrach saw a 25 percent reduction between 2020 and 2024. Additionally, projects dedicated to the recovery of associated gas have successfully valorized over one billion cubic meters of this gas, demonstrating a tangible commitment to minimizing gas flaring and associated emissions.

To support its long-term climate objectives, Sonatrach is implementing several key initiatives. These include enhancing Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) systems, improving the processes for measuring, reporting, and verifying emissions, and establishing baseline emissions data. These measures are integral to Sonatrach’s broader strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy efficiency, while continuing to develop energy resources responsibly and sustainably.
