Sonatrach, Thailand’s PTTEP Expand Energy Cooperation

Algeria's national energy company, Sonatrach, and Thailand's PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) have formalized a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signaling a renewed commitment to expanded energy cooperation. The agreement was signed by Sonatrach's CEO, Noureddine Daoudi, and PTTEP's CEO, Kanita Thanita Sagtwatayo, during an official ceremony held on the sidelines of the NAPEC 2026 Africa and Mediterranean Energy and Hydrogen Exhibition and Conference in Oran. This collaboration is set to explore broader avenues of mutual interest, further advancing Algeria's strategic industrial development, economic, and energy transformation initiatives.
The memorandum specifically targets bolstering investment within Algeria's hydrocarbon exploration and production sector. It also opens pathways for joint international cooperation, extending across the entire energy value chain. Beyond traditional hydrocarbon activities, the MoU encompasses future-oriented fields such as innovation, responsible energy transition, and the integration of modern technologies in line with global best practices. A core objective is to enhance national competencies and local content, aiming for effective integration into the global industrial chain while promoting operational synergy and increased production efficiency.
This strategic partnership builds upon a pre-existing relationship, as PTTEP has been an active partner in Algeria since 2002, notably involved in major hydrocarbon exploration and development projects such as Hassi Bir Rekaiz. The expanded scope of this new agreement further solidifies Algeria's growing stature as a strategic energy conduit between Africa and Europe. It also underscores the nation's appeal as a destination for direct foreign investments in both hydrocarbons and renewable energy, reinforcing Sonatrach's strategic alliances and contributing to the modernization of the Algerian energy sector.
