South Africa Eyes Algerian Hydrocarbon Investment Expansion

Algeria has opened new avenues for South African investment and partnerships within its oil and gas industry. This development follows recent talks in Algiers between Algeria's Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola. The discussions align with the outcomes of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's state visit to Algeria in December 2024, which occurred at the invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The comprehensive talks covered expanding cooperation across the entire hydrocarbon value chain. This includes prospecting, field development, production, refining, petrochemicals, and the commercialization of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Furthermore, the ministers addressed opportunities for developing infrastructure, facilitating technology transfer, and exchanging expertise to foster joint investment and industrial integration between the two nations. The engagement also explored strengthening partnerships between Algeria’s Sonatrach and the South African National Oil Company (SANPC), intensifying exchanges between sector operators, and enhancing institutional and technical cooperation between ALNAFT, ARH, and the South African Petroleum Agency (PASA).
To attract further investment, both parties underscored the importance of highlighting available opportunities and incentives in Algeria. South African companies are encouraged to explore these prospects and participate in the upcoming Algeria Bid Round 2026. The discussions also emphasized bolstering cooperation in training, skills development, and knowledge exchange, leveraging the capabilities of the Algerian Institute of Petroleum. Minister Arkab reiterated the hydrocarbon sector's readiness to support South African companies investing in Algeria, providing necessary facilities for high value-added joint projects, while Minister Lamola commended Algeria's regional and international standing in hydrocarbons and expressed his country's keen interest in deepening bilateral partnerships.
