Morocco Demolishes ‘Black Prison’ in Occupied Laayoune, Erasing Evidence of Rights Abuses

In a blatant attempt to erase collective memory and destroy material evidence of decades of grave human rights violations, Moroccan occupation authorities have demolished the notorious "Black Prison" in the occupied city of Laayoune, Western Sahara. For nearly half a century, this detention facility stood as a stark symbol of systematic repression and the brutalization of political detainees and advocates for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.

Black Prison Laayoune demolition

The destruction of this prison, infamous for its role in torturing and mistreating Sahrawi prisoners, represents a deliberate effort by Moroccan forces to conceal the extent of their crimes against the indigenous population. This act is seen by human rights groups as a further attempt to silence dissent and obliterate the historical record of resistance and suffering endured by the Sahrawi people under Moroccan occupation.
