Algeria Ranks Among Top 10 Global Importers of Chinese Cars in First Half of 2026
Algeria has significantly advanced its position in the global automotive trade, securing the tenth spot among the world's largest importers of Chinese cars during the first half of 2026. According to recent statistical data released by the Chinese Auto Dealers Association, Algeria received a total of 143,012 vehicles within this period. This notable growth underscores the accelerating commercial exchanges between Algeria and China, driven by the strong local demand for vehicles and the country's efforts to modernize its national automotive fleet.
The increase in Chinese car exports to Algeria was particularly striking, experiencing a record jump of 235% compared to the corresponding period in 2025, with an additional 100,382 vehicles imported. This positioned Algeria as the fourth-largest global market in terms of absolute growth, trailing only Russia, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. The diverse shipments included 100,941 conventional passenger cars, establishing Algeria as the third-largest global market for this specific category. Additionally, 32,996 transport trucks and 7,283 buses were imported, aimed at enhancing the passenger transport system. Currently, Algeria accounts for approximately 2.7% of China's total car exports, which extend across 200 countries.
These figures are particularly relevant as Algerian authorities plan to leverage the high domestic demand to strengthen their negotiation capabilities with Chinese manufacturers. The strategic objective is to progressively transition from direct vehicle importation towards fostering industrial investment within Algeria. This initiative also aims to encourage the localization of spare parts production and increase national integration rates through the development of local subcontracting networks, thereby boosting the domestic automotive industry and its value chain.
