Algeria Bolsters Niger’s Security with Military Aid Package
Algeria has significantly enhanced its security cooperation with Niger through the recent provision of four military helicopters and a comprehensive package of related equipment. The assistance, which includes both attack and transport helicopters, spare parts, maintenance supplies, and ammunition, was formally received by Nigerien military officials in Niamey. Algerian military representatives were present at the ceremony where General Salifou Mainassara, Niger's Air Force Chief of Staff, accepted the donation, which arrived via an Algerian Air Force aircraft.
This initiative represents a constructive development in the shared efforts to address regional security challenges. Both nations, which share an extensive 959-kilometer desert border, have agreed to deepen their collaboration, particularly in combating "terrorist threats," cross-border crime, and illicit trafficking. Niger faces persistent attacks from various extremist groups, including in areas close to the Algerian border, highlighting the critical importance of such joint security measures. This military aid follows Algeria's earlier delivery of a 40-megawatt power plant to Niger in June, designed to supply electricity to Niamey and its surrounding regions, further illustrating Algeria's commitment to holistic support for its neighbor.
The delivery of this military aid package also underscores the successful efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between Algeria and Niger, building on high-level engagements earlier this year. Following a period of strained relations, General Abdourahamane Tiani, Niger's military ruler, met with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Algiers in February to restart diplomatic relations. This positive trajectory demonstrates Algeria's dedication to fostering fraternal and historical ties with regional countries and its unwavering commitment to providing multifaceted support, particularly in defense, security, and the exchange of expertise, as affirmed by the Algerian Ministry of Defense.
