Algiers Commits to Sahel Security and Development Initiatives

Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf reaffirmed the nation's consistent readiness to support Sahel-Saharan countries in addressing security and development challenges. Speaking in New York during the general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Minister Attaf emphasized Algeria's commitment, rooted in its historical solidarity as a neighboring and sister country, to assist these nations and support political solutions that safeguard regional stability and foster broader prospects for progress.

Minister Attaf highlighted Algeria's view of the Sahel region as a unified space where security, development, and stability challenges intertwine. He echoed President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's assertion that combating terrorism cannot rely solely on a security-focused approach, just as poverty and marginalization cannot be addressed in isolation from the security environment that enables terrorist groups and organized crime networks to thrive. This perspective underscores that security and development are inextricably linked, representing two facets of the same objective.

Algeria's proposed approach is founded on supporting the security of the region's nations, accompanying their development efforts, and promoting reconciliation and dialogue. This comprehensive strategy also includes addressing the underlying causes of instability, all while strictly adhering to the principles of state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and respect for the choices of the peoples in the region. Algeria firmly believes that peace cannot be built without development, nor can development be revitalized without security and stability.
