President Tebboune Offers Support for South Sudan Elections
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed Algeria's comprehensive commitment to South Sudan's peace and electoral process during a virtual summit of the African Union's High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan (C5). Convened by South Africa, the committee's chair, the meeting addressed the critical juncture faced by South Sudan as it approaches presidential elections, emphasizing the urgency of ending its prolonged internal crisis. President Tebboune underscored that Algeria's engagement is rooted in a principled and unwavering commitment to stability in the region.
In his address, President Tebboune called for all signatories of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan to engage in an inclusive and constructive political dialogue, prioritizing the national interest over short-term considerations. He stressed that this agreement remains the legitimate political framework for overcoming the current impasse and that the South Sudanese people alone must determine their future. The President also urged all parties to pursue de-escalation, halt hostilities across the country, address prevailing security challenges, and advance the unification of forces, while welcoming South Africa's initiative to host political dialogue among the agreement's signatories.
Further, President Tebboune called on South Sudan's transitional authorities to expedite the provision of national funding for electoral institutions and to publish a realistic, consensual electoral roadmap that reassures all political actors and the public. He appealed to African Union member states and international partners to fulfill their commitments and contribute concretely to closing the electoral funding gap before October. Reaffirming Algeria's unwavering solidarity, President Tebboune offered the country's readiness to provide all necessary logistical and technical support to South Sudanese authorities and electoral bodies during this crucial phase. He concluded by advocating for a united African message of solidarity and collective commitment to guide South Sudan towards peace and stability, asserting that its success in establishing security is a success for all of Africa.
