Ambassador Khelifi Stresses Mediterranean Water Cooperation

Algeria has underscored the critical importance of intensifying efforts, dialogue, and cooperation among Mediterranean nations to confront the pressing challenges posed by climate change and escalating water demand. This stance was articulated during the Second Ministerial Conference of the Union for the Mediterranean on Water, held in Rome, Italy, on September 28, 2026. Ambassador Mohamed Khelifi, leading the Algerian delegation, delivered a statement on behalf of the Minister of Water Resources, highlighting the necessity of making water security a shared priority for all countries in the region.

During the conference, Ambassador Khelifi also showcased Algeria's dedicated efforts to rationalize water resource utilization, diversify its sources, and bolster research and capacity development. These initiatives are integral to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's policy framework, which focuses on advancing non-conventional water resources and expanding seawater desalination projects, demonstrating a proactive national strategy to secure water provisions for its population.

Furthermore, Ambassador Khelifi addressed the severe humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, which is experiencing dire conditions due to the destruction of infrastructure and the absence of fundamental services, particularly water and sanitation systems. In this context, he called for robust support to rehabilitate the damaged water infrastructure and to enhance the responsiveness to the urgent water needs of the residents in the affected area.
