African Football Confederation Eyes Algeria for CAN 2027

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reached out to Algeria regarding its potential to host the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2027. This contact follows concerns over delays in construction and preparations by the initially selected nations, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. While the tournament is officially slated to proceed as “CAN Pamoja” across the three East African countries, CAF is reportedly exploring contingency options to ensure the successful delivery of the prestigious competition.

Algeria stands out as a strong candidate due to its robust and modern sports infrastructure. The nation demonstrated its capacity to host major international football events during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022, held in early 2023. This successful organization utilized several state-of-the-art stadiums, including those in Algiers, Oran, Constantine, and Annaba, which are equipped to meet international standards. CAF is particularly interested in countries capable of quickly assuming hosting duties without requiring extensive new construction, a criterion Algeria readily fulfills with its seven approved stadiums.

The urgency of the situation has been acknowledged by CAF officials, with a critical inspection visit to the current hosts scheduled for January 2027. Should the ongoing preparations not advance sufficiently, Algeria is positioned as a ready and experienced alternative. The possibility of a late host change for the Africa Cup of Nations is not unprecedented, reflecting CAF's commitment to ensuring the tournament's high standards and timely execution.
