Tanzanian Ambassador Highlights Algeria as Africa’s Top Pharmaceutical Producer
Algeria currently stands as the largest producer of pharmaceutical products in Africa, a point underscored by Mobhare Holmes Matinyi, the Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to Algeria. Speaking at a press conference at the embassy, Ambassador Matinyi highlighted significant investment opportunities aimed at bolstering cooperation between Algeria and Tanzania and initiating a new phase of partnership between the two countries. The Ambassador outlined promising prospects for expanding trade and enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in key sectors such as agriculture, the pharmaceutical industry, energy, tourism, and higher education.
Regarding the pharmaceutical sector, Ambassador Matinyi affirmed Algeria's leading position on the continent. He also noted recent discussions with Algeria's Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Kouidri, concerning the implementation of a previously signed agreement in this field. As a tangible step towards further cooperation, a high-level Algerian delegation, including representatives from the National Pharmaceutical Products Agency and the Saidal Group, is scheduled to visit Tanzania. This visit, at the invitation of the Tanzanian Medicines and Medical Devices Authority, aims to explore new opportunities for collaboration.
Beyond pharmaceuticals, the Tanzanian diplomat also addressed broader cooperation initiatives. A delegation from the board of directors of the power transmission and distribution company affiliated with Tanzania Electric Supply Company visited Algeria in July to gain insights into Algeria's developments in the energy sector, exchange expertise, and establish cooperative relationships. In the realm of higher education, Ambassador Matinyi recalled Algeria's decision in August to award 176 university scholarships to Tanzanian students, noting that the Tanzanian government has since announced the enrollment of 150 high-achieving secondary school students into Algerian scholarship programs for the 2026/2027 academic year, recognizing the quality of Algerian education. He further invited Algerian investors to explore collaboration opportunities with Tanzanian counterparts in various vital areas, including the trade of agricultural products such as cashew nuts, of which Tanzania is a top global producer.
