SoutH2 Corridor Aims for 4 Million Tons of Green Hydrogen

Energy ministers from Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Austria, and Germany recently signed the Algiers Ministerial Declaration, marking a significant step for the SoutH2 Corridor project. This initiative, formalized in the Algerian capital following their second ministerial meeting, aims to establish a 3,000 km pipeline dedicated to transporting 4 million tons of green hydrogen annually from Algeria to the three European partner nations.

The SoutH2 Corridor project holds strategic importance as a catalyst for regional and Euro-Mediterranean integration within the green energy sector. The projected 4 million tons of green hydrogen represents approximately 10% of Europe's anticipated clean fuel demand by 2040, highlighting Algeria's crucial role in meeting future energy needs. This collaborative effort renews a shared commitment to fostering energy cooperation across the region.

To ensure the project's continued development and ultimate success, the declaration provides for the establishment of a dedicated secretariat for technical support, to be assisted by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Furthermore, the signatories emphasized the importance of political backing through a regular, structured dialogue among the partner nations. This collective commitment underscores the shared goal of developing a fruitful cross-Mediterranean energy partnership and contributing to mutual economic growth and prosperity.
