European Union Signals Deeper Energy Partnership with Algeria

The European Union is intensifying its efforts to consolidate energy cooperation with Algeria, signaling a robust commitment that spans traditional hydrocarbons and extends into new and renewable energy sources. This initiative positions Algeria as an indispensable actor for European energy security, particularly amidst global disruptions to supply chains and tightening energy markets. Several European entities have increasingly identified Algeria as an attractive destination for fostering their asset portfolios, capitalizing on opportunities within a rapidly developing energy sector.
A notable development underscoring this reinforced partnership is the European Union's announcement of its first-time participation in the Napec 2026 conference, an annual energy and hydrogen event in Africa and the Mediterranean scheduled to take place in Oran. This participation follows a meeting in Algiers involving energy ministers from the five countries engaged in the SoutH2 project and the green hydrogen industry. According to a statement from the European Union embassy in Algeria, this presence signifies the EU's dedication to deepening energy sector cooperation, recognizing Algeria as a reliable partner. The statement further emphasizes the importance of consolidating a durable partnership focused on innovation and future advancements, benefiting both citizens and economies.
Beyond traditional gas supplies, which hold significant importance in Algeria-EU relations, Algeria has emerged as a key player in the Mediterranean energy landscape, gaining increasing prominence in Europe's energy transition through emerging markets such as hydrogen and green electricity. The European Union's presence at Napec 2026 will feature high-level institutional meetings, thematic discussions on energy transition challenges, and a dedicated exhibition highlighting EU-supported initiatives and programs within Algeria and the broader Mediterranean region. These initiatives include the TaqatHy+ program, aimed at developing the renewable hydrogen value chain, and regional dynamics fostered by the Pact for the Mediterranean and the Trans Mediterranean Renewable Energy and Clean Tech Cooperation Initiative (T-Med), which promote renewable energies, hydrogen, regional energy system integration, and investment mobilization.
