Security Foils Gold, Euro Smuggling at Oran Airport

Authorities at Oran Ahmed Ben Bella International Airport successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle a significant quantity of gold and foreign currency destined for Europe. On Tuesday, October 6, personnel from the Air and Border Police (PAF), utilizing airport scanning technology, identified a passenger attempting to board a flight to a European country with undeclared valuables. The operation resulted in the seizure of nine gold ingots, weighing a total of 7.73 kilograms, and 20,340 euros in cash, which were meticulously concealed on the individual.

This decisive action was conducted in close coordination with the Regional Service for Combating Organized Crime in Oran, highlighting the integrated efforts of Algerian law enforcement. Following the initial interception, an investigation swiftly led to the arrest of two accomplices. These individuals, along with the passenger, are alleged members of an organized criminal network specifically involved in money laundering and the illicit transfer of funds internationally. Two vehicles associated with the suspects were also seized.

The three individuals face prosecution for charges including money laundering within an organized criminal group and violations of Algerian regulations pertaining to foreign exchange and capital movements to and from abroad. This successful operation underscores the rigorous controls implemented by Algerian authorities at national ports and airports to counter such criminal activities, reinforcing the nation's commitment to upholding financial security and combating transnational organized crime.
