Norway, Algeria Deepen Cooperation in Fisheries and Aquaculture

Algeria, represented by Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries Sid Ali Khaldi, co-presided the opening of "Algeria Day" in Oslo. The event, held on October 7, 2026, alongside Norway's Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, Marianne Sivertsen Næss, was organized on the eve of the 15th Scandinavian-African Economic Summit. Algeria participated in the summit as a special guest of honor, leveraging the "Algeria Day" platform to showcase its economic and cultural assets and promote investment and partnership opportunities across strategic sectors. Minister Khaldi led the Algerian delegation, having been mandated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for this engagement.

During the event, Minister Khaldi held detailed discussions with his Norwegian counterpart, Marianne Sivertsen Næss, focusing on advancing bilateral cooperation in fishing and aquaculture. Both ministers emphasized the importance of developing partnerships in sustainable management of fishery resources, modernizing structures and equipment, and transforming fishery products. The talks specifically aimed at utilizing Norway's internationally recognized expertise in these fields to benefit Algeria's growing sector.

Both countries expressed a readiness to explore new partnership and investment projects within the fishing and aquaculture sectors. This commitment extends to ongoing consultations, the exchange of expertise, strengthening scientific and technical cooperation, and enhancing training programs. Additionally, the ministers agreed to encourage collaborative partnerships between institutions, scientific bodies, and economic operators from both nations, aligning with the sustained positive momentum in Algeria-Norway relations. As part of "Algeria Day," a Memorandum of Understanding was formally signed between the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Oslo Chamber of Commerce, establishing an institutional framework to bring together entrepreneurs from Algeria and Norway.

Minister Khaldi highlighted Algeria's strategic prioritization of the agriculture sector, which is central to achieving food security and diversifying the national economy. He encouraged Norwegian investors to capitalize on partnership opportunities in Algeria, citing significant improvements in the business environment, including a stable legal framework for investment, the establishment of a one-stop shop, and strengthened guarantees for foreign partners. The event also featured the opening of an exhibition of Algerian products, co-inaugurated by Minister Khaldi and his Norwegian counterpart, further underscoring the potential for economic exchange.
