Slimani Affirms Algeria’s Human Rights Commitment at IPU Assembly

Mohamed Larbi Slimani, Vice-President of the Council of the Nation and head of the Algerian parliamentary delegation, highlighted Algeria's unwavering commitment to human rights and international law during the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha, Tanzania. Slimani underscored that establishing good governance and fostering trust between citizens and state institutions are fundamental prerequisites for empowering local communities, broadening participation, and ensuring equitable opportunities for all.

Algeria is actively engaged in building institutions that derive their legitimacy from the popular will, while simultaneously enhancing their performance and expanding citizen involvement in decision-making processes. These national efforts include significant reforms aimed at combating corruption and reinforcing the rule of law, transparency, and accountability. The parliament, through its legislative and oversight powers, also plays a role in supporting the presence of youth and women in political life.

Institutions such as the National Observatory of Civil Society, the Supreme Council for Youth, and the Republic's Mediator are instrumental in expanding channels for communication and participation across the nation. Enhancing citizen trust in state institutions is also pursued through economic empowerment, achieved by encouraging local investment, supporting initiatives, and facilitating financing to transform innovative ideas into productive projects that benefit the community.

On the international stage, Mr. Slimani advocated for the restoration of global peoples' trust in international institutions, urging the rejection of selectivity, ensuring fair representation within the UN Security Council, and holding accountable states that provoke conflicts and violate the rights of peoples. He specifically linked good governance to ending the atrocities in Palestine and enabling the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. Furthermore, he called for accelerating the decolonization of Western Sahara and implementing international legitimacy to guarantee the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence.
