Laghouat-Tamanrasset Railway Launch Planned, Methane Reduction Prioritized

The government, led by the Prime Minister, recently convened a meeting to address various sectors including finance, environment, public works, and health, alongside ongoing preparations for the upcoming local elections. During this session, the preliminary draft of the 2024 budget settlement law was reviewed, serving as a fundamental tool for verifying the alignment of financial law forecasts with actual results and assessing the implementation of objectives. The government also examined the material and logistical aspects of organizing and conducting local elections scheduled for November 28, 2026, ensuring all necessary conditions and resources are in place according to regulatory provisions.

In line with Algeria's international commitments to reduce polluting emissions, the government heard a presentation on the national mechanism for detecting, measuring, and reducing methane emissions. The control of methane emissions was highlighted as a strategic imperative for Algeria, crucial for fulfilling its international climate obligations, safeguarding energy resources, and enhancing the competitiveness of its exports. This initiative aims to bolster the measurement, monitoring, and reduction of methane emissions, while also fostering improved coordination among relevant sectors. These efforts are part of a broader state strategy to elevate the environmental performance of the national economy and support local economic operators in meeting international standards for greenhouse gas reduction.

Furthermore, the government addressed the immediate launch of railway projects connecting Laghouat, M'nia, In Salah, and Tamanrasset, following directives from the President of the Republic issued during a cabinet meeting on October 4, 2026. These railway lines are deemed a top priority within the public works sector, with a strong emphasis on accelerating construction and ensuring the entire project is delivered by the end of 2028. The government assessed the progress of field measures related to equipping workshops and providing essential resources to ensure that work commences effectively within the specified timelines. Additionally, discussions focused on strengthening national healthcare capacities, particularly through the development and construction of major, modern healthcare facilities across the country.
