Bordj Badji Mokhtar Airport Targets 24/7 Operation by 2027

Bordj Badji Mokhtar airport, located in Algeria's far south, is set to significantly enhance its operational capabilities by transitioning to 24-hour service in the first half of 2027. This milestone follows an extensive modernization program focused on strengthening the airport's technical and operational infrastructure, as announced by the Établissement national de la navigation aérienne (ENNA). The initiative underscores a commitment to improving regional connectivity and fostering economic growth within this strategic border area.

The timeline for continuous operations was established during a coordination meeting on October 6, involving local authorities and key stakeholders. Presided over by the wali of Bordj Badji Mokhtar, the gathering included ENNA Director General Mounir Chermati and representatives from various relevant sectors. Discussions centered on evaluating existing investments and planning future projects designed to optimize the airport's operational conditions. A primary objective of this modernization is to bolster the security of air operations while simultaneously supporting the economic development of the region.

Key technical improvements are central to the modernization effort, including the installation of an Instrument Landing System/Distance Measuring Equipment (ILS/DME), which will facilitate aircraft approach and landing procedures. While the installation and technical commissioning of this system are complete, it awaits final homologation before full operational deployment. Furthermore, the program anticipates an increase in specialized personnel, such as air traffic controllers, engineers, and technicians in telecommunications, energy, and lighting. The airport will also receive new rescue and firefighting vehicles, alongside other advanced air navigation equipment, ensuring a comprehensive upgrade to meet its new operational demands.
