Global Robotics Challenge Gold for Algerian High Schoolers

A team of five Algerian high school students recently clinched a gold medal at the prestigious First Global Challenge 2026 in Incheon, South Korea. Held from October 7 to 10, this global robotics competition saw the Algerian quintet raise the national flag on the podium, outperforming formidable candidates from over 190 countries. This triumph underscores Algeria's rising prominence in the highly interdisciplinary field of robotics, demanding strong competencies in mechanics, electronics, and computer science.

This latest achievement adds to a series of significant international victories for Algerian youth in technology. Earlier this year, the Albert Einstein establishment team from Sidi Bel Abbès secured first place worldwide at the Robot Challenge in Beijing. Additionally, an Algerian delegation earned five world awards in innovation, entrepreneurship, and robotics at the Codeavour 7.0 international competition in Jakarta, Indonesia, in May, drawing from a pool of 300,000 participants. Previous success also includes a gold medal for the MediCart intelligent medical robot, along with silver and bronze awards for environmental solutions, at the Youth Robot Competition in South Korea in August 2025.

These high-level performances are rooted in a dynamic national academic and scientific ecosystem, bolstered by a strong political will to promote startups and innovation, which has notably intensified since 2020. This commitment is evident through structural, institutional, and financial reforms, including an incentive mechanism for startup introductions to the stock market, offering a three-year exemption from listing fees for the period 2026-2028. Such measures align with public authorities' strategic orientations to advance startups, entrepreneurship, and innovation as crucial drivers for diversifying the national economy.

Further affirming Algeria's scientific influence is the 2026 Stanford-Elsevier ranking, which lists 45 Algerian researchers among the top 2% most influential scientists globally, with four appearing in the top 10 within the Maghreb region. The
