Niger Defense Minister Meets President Tebboune, Deepens Security Ties

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, received General Salifou Modi, Niger's Minister of State and Minister of National Defense, in Algeria. The high-level meeting was also attended by General Saïd Chengriha, Chief of Staff of the People's National Army. This reception underscored the shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Niger, particularly in defense and security matters.
General Salifou Modi's visit involved extensive discussions with General Chengriha at the Ministry of National Defense, where both parties addressed the state of bilateral military cooperation and exchanged views on issues of common interest. A primary objective of these engagements was to reinforce military coordination and secure the 900-kilometer common border shared by the two nations. This proactive approach aims to counter regional threats and address foreign interference, reflecting a mutual resolve for regional stability.
General Chengriha emphasized that relations between Algeria and Niger are deeply rooted, built on a foundation of brotherhood, sincere solidarity, and good neighborliness. He noted that this visit is part of a renewed dynamism in Algerian-Nigerien relations, reflecting the common will of both countries' leadership to enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly in defense and security. He further highlighted that this engagement follows President Abdourahamane Tiani's historic visit to Algeria in February 2026, a pivotal moment that reaffirmed the strong commitment of both leaders to elevate relations and collaboratively confront regional challenges with renewed solidarity and shared responsibility. General Modi expressed his appreciation for the visit and his continuous desire to bolster military cooperation, commending the multi-dimensional coordination between the two nations.
The intensifying relationship between Algeria and Niger has recently seen increased political consultation and enhanced bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including energy, infrastructure, trade, and training, culminating in signed agreements and cooperation programs. In the military domain, Algeria previously supplied military aid to the Nigerien army in early August, including four helicopters, military equipment, ammunition, spare parts, and logistical support. Additionally, Algeria deployed four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets, accompanied by an aerial refueling aircraft, to Niamey on August 30, following a reported coup attempt in Niger.
