National Drug Output Covers 84% of Algerian Needs

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that Algeria now produces 84% of its pharmaceutical needs, a figure that includes complex medicines for conditions such as diabetes and cancer. The announcement was made during a national meeting with economic operators at the Abdellatif Rahal International Conference Center in Algiers. This development is a key part of the national economic transformation efforts aimed at reducing reliance on imports and strengthening production capabilities across various sectors.

This substantial increase in local pharmaceutical production is critical for enhancing national health security and decreasing dependence on foreign markets. It ensures a more stable supply and continuous treatment, especially for chronic diseases and cancer, which necessitate specialized drugs and consistent provisions. The focus on developing domestic manufacturing capacities reflects a broader strategic objective to achieve self-sufficiency in vital areas.

The country's commitment to bolstering its pharmaceutical sector was further highlighted when Algeria hosted the African Ministerial Conference on Local Production of Medicines and Health Technologies in November 2025. This event, attended by representatives from various African nations, underscored the importance of localizing drug production, facilitating technology transfer, and developing industrial capabilities to meet health requirements. Algeria expressed its aspiration during the conference to strengthen its position in the African pharmaceutical industry, utilizing its national institutions, human resources, and production capacities to meet local demand and explore opportunities for expanding exports.
