Niger Hosts Algerian Specialists for Goumeri W-8 Well Control

Algerian experts from Sonatrach, the national hydrocarbons company, are currently on the ground in Niger to provide technical assistance following an oil well eruption. Specialists were invited by the Nigerien government to help address the incident at the Goumeri W-8 field, located in the Diffa region's Agadem oil block. Their presence highlights Algeria's commitment to regional cooperation and its technical capabilities in energy crisis management.
The Algerian team joined Nigerien ministers of Petroleum and Environment on October 14, 2026, as part of a coordinated mission. This joint effort involves assessing damage, coordinating security measures for the installations, and providing crucial technical support to the teams already working to contain crude oil and mitigate environmental impacts. The mission aims to identify effective solutions for regaining permanent control of the well.
The eruption at Goumeri W-8, operated by CNPC Niger Petroleum S.A., initially occurred on September 25, marked by crude oil and gas projections. While the Nigerien Ministry of Petroleum indicated on October 12 that initial oil flows were contained, the eruption continued at a reduced intensity, necessitating sustained intervention. The ongoing operations focus on securing the site, controlling oil flows, and limiting repercussions on surrounding soil and resources, with particular attention to nearby wells W-3 and W-4 on the same platform.
