1,581 km Saharan Rail Project Ordered, Tamanrasset to Start

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has issued directives for the immediate commencement of Algeria's Saharan rail project, with initial operations slated to begin from Tamanrasset. This expansive infrastructure endeavor is set to span 1,581 kilometers, establishing a vital connection across the southern regions of the country. The comprehensive route is planned to link Laghouat, Ghardaïa, El Meniaa, In Salah, and Tamanrasset, underscoring a commitment to enhancing national connectivity.
The project, which seeks to position railway networks as a core axis for economic development, has garnered significant international support. The African Development Bank (BAD) has approved partial funding, including a loan of $878.09 million in July for the 495-kilometer Laghouat–El Meniaa section. This follows a previous BAD loan of €747.32 million approved in December 2025, reflecting sustained investment in the nation's railway capabilities.
With an ambitious target for completion by the end of 2028, the Saharan rail project represents a strategic national initiative aimed at fostering economic and social integration within Algeria's vast southern territories. The presidential order of October 18, 2026, building on earlier instructions from October 4, signals a determined push to advance this transformative infrastructure development.
