ANIE Approves Vast Majority of Local Election Lists

The National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) unveiled its provisional report on candidacy files for the upcoming local elections on 19 October 2026. These elections, scheduled for November 28, will determine the composition of the Communal and Wilaya People's Assemblies. The report indicates a highly efficient review process, with only nine candidate lists rejected out of more than 6,000 filed nationwide, underscoring the broad participation and successful compliance by most candidates.

A detailed breakdown of the provisional results shows minimal rejections across both assembly types. For the People's Communal Assemblies (APC), ANIE reviewed 5,631 submitted lists nationwide and rejected only three, a remarkably low rejection rate of 0.05 percent. Similarly, for the People's Wilaya Assemblies (APW), six lists out of 434 submitted did not pass review, representing a rejection rate of 1.38 percent. ANIE cited missing signature forms and incomplete files as the primary reasons for these rejections.

Candidates whose lists were rejected retain the right to challenge these decisions before administrative courts, ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process. Furthermore, a replacement process for any rejected candidates is available through ANIE's wilaya coordinators until 28 October 2026. The authority has also clearly defined the broader legal grounds for disqualification, which include missing documentation, non-registration on the local electoral roll, being under 23 years of age on election day, an unresolved national service obligation, or having a final criminal conviction without rehabilitation.
