Minister Adjal: 15,000 MW Renewable Energy Goal by 2035

Algeria's Minister of Energy, Mourad Adjal, has affirmed a strategic national objective to achieve 15,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy production by 2035. This ambitious target forms a core component of the country's efforts to diversify its national energy mix, safeguard natural resources, and bolster energy security. The initiative, announced during a presentation to the Finance and Budget Committee of the National People's Assembly, underscores Algeria's commitment to sustainable development through new and renewable energy sources.

The national program for renewable energy development is already underway, with a significant first phase focusing on solar photovoltaic projects. This initial stage involves the construction of facilities capable of generating 3,200 MW, distributed across 21 stations in 14 provinces. To date, 760 MW of this capacity has already entered service, contributing to the country's electricity supply and marking tangible progress toward the broader 2035 objective.

Beyond grid-connected projects, Algeria is also implementing several off-grid renewable energy initiatives. These include the electrification of more than 2,500 isolated homes using solar photovoltaic systems, the installation of 100 solar-powered water pumping systems for agricultural exploitations, and the deployment of 1,000 solar energy systems on the rooftops of public buildings and facilities. Concurrently, preparatory studies are in progress for future wind energy projects, alongside continued exploration of the potential in geothermal, biomass, and hydropower.
