European Energy Demand Drives French Request to Algeria

France has made an urgent request to Algeria for increased deliveries of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). This initiative comes amid global energy market tensions and France's efforts to secure diverse supply sources. According to specialized platforms, citing informed sources, contacts have been established between Paris and Algiers to explore increasing volumes as soon as possible. French President Emmanuel Macron is also reportedly seeking additional supplies from Gulf countries and other providers, underscoring Algeria's significance as a proximate energy source for the European market.

Algeria reportedly possesses a margin to increase its oil shipments to France. Data cited by Attaqa indicates a notable rise in Algerian oil exports to the French market. In April 2026, maritime deliveries reached approximately 138,000 barrels per day, a substantial increase from 43,000 barrels per day in March of the same year. Year-on-year, exports also showed an increase of about 14% in April 2026 compared to April 2025, when deliveries were around 121,000 barrels per day. France represented nearly 15% of Algeria's oil exports during that month, surpassing several other markets including South Korea, Spain, the United States, and Italy. Over the first four months of 2026, Algerian oil exports to France averaged about 95,000 barrels per day, up from 92,000 barrels per day in the corresponding period of 2025.

However, an immediate increase in LNG volumes destined for France may be more challenging to implement due to Sonatrach's existing contractual commitments with other clients. LNG supply contracts typically specify volumes and delivery schedules, meaning any redirection of cargo or increase in available quantities would necessitate specific commercial and logistical arrangements. Sources cited by Attaqa suggest that Sonatrach might encounter difficulties in rapidly meeting additional French demand for LNG, even as an increase in oil exports remains feasible. Official details regarding the specific additional volumes requested, proposed delivery deadlines, or Algeria's definitive response have not yet been publicly disclosed, with future discussions dependent on Algeria's available capacities, Sonatrach's contractual obligations, and the evolving international energy market demands.
