Algiers, Dhaka Sign Broad Energy Cooperation MoU

Algeria and the People's Republic of Bangladesh formally established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday at the Ministry of Hydrocarbons in Algiers. This agreement, signed by Algeria's Minister for Hydrocarbon Mohamed Arkab and Bangladesh's Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood, aims to bolster bilateral cooperation and cultivate a partnership within the hydrocarbons sector. The initiative is grounded in principles of mutual benefit and common interests, intending to strengthen Bangladesh's energy security and expand economic and trade collaboration between the two nations.
The comprehensive MoU addresses multiple facets of the hydrocarbons value chain, spanning from oil and gas exploration and production to the development of associated infrastructure for transport, processing, storage, and marketing. It also explores opportunities for investment and infrastructure development. Critically, the memorandum facilitates the study of potential imports of crude oil, refined petroleum products, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and liquefied natural gas (LNG) into the Bangladeshi market. Additionally, it covers the supply of fertilizers, notably urea, fostering increased trade exchanges and creating avenues for new partnerships.
The agreement encourages collaboration between national entities, including Algeria's Sonatrach, through the exchange of expertise and information, technical assessments, and professional training to enhance competencies across exploration, production, processing, and distribution of hydrocarbons. During the visit to Algeria, Minister Mahmood also paid a courtesy call on Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, engaging in discussions that highlighted broad cooperation opportunities in trade, investment, agriculture, and education. This step is expected to solidify Algerian-Bangladeshi relations, opening new prospects for energy sector cooperation and serving the shared economic interests of both countries.
