Algiers Port Development Explored by Council of Nation

A temporary information mission from the Equipment and Local Development Committee of the Council of the Nation initiated a field visit to the Port of Algiers. Led by Noureddine Habib, Chairman of the Committee, on behalf of Council President Azzouz Nasri, the delegation's primary objective was to assess the port's current operational status and explore opportunities for developing its infrastructure and enhancing its services. The mission commenced at the Algiers Governorate headquarters, where members reviewed planned development projects aimed at modernizing the capital, including improvements to its urban and maritime front, transport, infrastructure, and green spaces.

At the Port of Algiers, the mission received a comprehensive presentation detailing the institution's activities and facilities. Discussions focused on crucial areas such as modernizing management practices, expanding the port's absorption capacity, and improving the quality of services offered to port users. Emphasis was placed on strengthening coordination between the port authority and local government bodies, alongside leveraging international best practices in port management to optimize operations and efficiency.

The visit generated several key proposals, including enhancing the utilization of railway transport to streamline goods movement and improving loading, unloading, and storage operations. Further suggestions encompassed the establishment of a dedicated commercial space within the port area and the potential for opening the port to citizens, thereby fostering a stronger connection with the capital's urban environment. Concluding their visit, the delegation thoroughly inspected various port facilities, observing ship reception conditions, cargo traffic, and handling operations to identify available capabilities and address challenges hindering performance development and service modernization.
