Government Reviews National Anti-Drug Strategy for 2025-2029

The Algerian government has conducted a mid-term evaluation of its national strategy for preventing and combating drugs and psychotropic substances, covering the 2025-2029 period. This review, taking place one year after the strategy's approval in April 2025, occurred during a government meeting chaired by Prime Minister Ghrieb. The discussions centered on reinforcing the institutional system related to the strategy and examining the field results achieved by its action plan, which is based on proactivity, deterrence, and care.
The comprehensive national strategy is structured around four primary axes, designed to address various facets of drug-related issues. These include investing in prevention through proactive awareness and sensitization campaigns highlighting the negative effects of drugs and psychotropic substances. Additionally, the strategy focuses on activating treatment frameworks and facilitating the reintegration of addicts by strengthening the national care system available to them.
Furthermore, the strategy involves adopting a comprehensive penal policy, ensuring that national legislation and regulations are adapted to the evolving nature of drug-related crimes. A crucial component is also the enhancement of international cooperation and coordination with various relevant international and regional mechanisms for drug prevention and control. The government stressed the necessity of reinforcing field and community work, specifically by involving civil society as an integral part of national efforts to combat this scourge and limit its spread. The action plan's effectiveness will be subject to monthly evaluations at the government level to ensure its continuous adaptation to new transformations in organized crime.
