Pharmaceutical Exports Reach 33 Nations, Targeting Regional Hub Status

Algeria's pharmaceutical industry has achieved substantial progress, now meeting 82% of national demand with its products. This strategic gain reflects the sector's development, providing a robust foundation for 233 national pharmaceutical production institutions. The Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry has further reinforced this foundation by announcing the first national list of essential pharmaceutical materials, a critical step in directing production and investment towards public health priorities and ensuring supply continuity.
The sector's ambitions extend to regional and international markets, building on encouraging export figures. In 2025, Algeria's pharmaceutical and medical supplies exports reached approximately 52 million USD, spanning 33 countries, including 18 across Africa. The Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry is actively working to increase this export value in 2026, with a strategic focus on expanding commercial presence in African and Middle Eastern markets, while also pursuing opportunities in European markets for locally manufactured medical supplies. Algeria's role in hosting the African Ministerial Conference on Local Production of Medicines and Health Technologies in November 2025, which led to new export contracts for Algerian pharmaceutical products, underscores its commitment to continental cooperation.
Driving this export expansion is a strong emphasis on product quality and compliance with international standards, which is vital for accessing global markets. Technical and regulatory support helps economic operators prepare export files and understand target market requirements. Furthermore, Algeria is advancing its industrial capabilities through local production of raw materials, exemplified by the upcoming paracetamol raw material factory project from the Saidal group, expected to be operational in nine months. These combined efforts, alongside encouraging innovation, developing specialized competencies, and investing in raw materials and pharmaceutical technologies, position Algeria to become a prominent regional pharmaceutical hub, leveraging its strategic location and accumulated expertise.
