Algiers, Dhaka Forge Expanded Energy and Economic Ties

Algeria has significantly strengthened its energy and economic cooperation with Bangladesh following a bilateral meeting in Algiers between Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir. A key outcome of the discussions was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on hydrocarbon sector cooperation. This agreement was prioritized under an immediate directive from the Algerian President, underscoring Algeria's commitment to addressing Bangladesh's energy requirements. The MoU facilitates new opportunities for Bangladesh to import liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and various petroleum products from Algeria through government-to-government arrangements.
Beyond immediate energy imports, the agreement also establishes pathways for joint efforts in developing critical energy infrastructure. These opportunities include the collaborative establishment of oil refineries and LNG infrastructure in Bangladesh, as well as the joint exploration of new coal and gas fields within the country. Further enhancing this partnership, the Algerian Petroleum Institute has expressed its willingness to provide technical training and facilitate knowledge exchange programs for Bangladeshi engineers and technical personnel, aiming to bolster Bangladesh's indigenous technical capabilities in its energy sector.
The scope of cooperation extends beyond hydrocarbons to encompass broader economic and diplomatic engagements. Discussions during the meeting covered mutual interests in sectors such as fertilizers, agriculture, textiles, pharmaceuticals, leather, trade, and education. Algeria specifically conveyed its readiness to collaborate on meeting Bangladesh's fertilizer demands and expressed interest in leveraging Bangladesh's expertise to revitalize its own textile industry. Both nations also committed to expanding bilateral trade and increasing investments in the energy sector for their mutual benefit, alongside emphasizing the importance of regular Foreign Office Consultations, with the next session scheduled for Dhaka, and the exchange of high-level visits to further solidify their robust bilateral relations.
