University of Tlemcen Hosts IC-TWEP 2026 International Conference on Transboundary Water Protection

The University of Tlemcen, Algeria, officially opened the International Conference on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and the Prevention of Environmental Pollution (IC-TWEP 2026) on October 26, 2026. Organized in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Scientific Research and Technological Development, the conference continues until October 29, bringing together international researchers, policymakers, and environmental experts.
The opening ceremony took place at the Mustapha Djaafour Lecture Hall, attended by government officials, diplomatic representatives, university leaders, and specialists from the water, energy, and environmental sectors. Professor Cherifa Abdelbaki, Conference Chair, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing water pollution, climate change, and sustainable resource management. She highlighted the event’s international participation, with researchers representing 26 nationalities and authors from 19 nationalities.
Professor Mourad Meghachou, Rector of the University of Tlemcen, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to scientific innovation, environmental sustainability, and collaborative research. The conference addresses seven major scientific themes, including climate change, innovative water treatment technologies, environmental governance, water diplomacy, community participation, scientific education, and digital transformation.
Special attention is given to artificial intelligence, big data, flood prediction, and pollution monitoring, reflecting the growing importance of advanced technologies in sustainable water management.
The scientific program featured keynote presentations by Professor Mustapha Kamel Mihoubi, former Algerian Minister of Water Resources, and Professor Nidal Salim, Director of the Global Institute for Water, Environment and Health in Geneva, Switzerland. Their presentations explored Algeria’s water security strategy, desalination technologies, integrated water resources management, and the relationship between water quality, environmental protection, and public health.
The conference also highlights environmental challenges associated with transboundary pollution, particularly around the Hammam Boughrara Dam, which offers valuable opportunities for environmental monitoring and applied scientific research.
IC-TWEP 2026 aims to strengthen international scientific cooperation, promote innovative technologies, and support sustainable water governance. By connecting scientific expertise with environmental policy, the University of Tlemcen seeks to improve water security, protect shared water resources, and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
