United Nations Praises Algeria’s 2035 Emissions Target

The United Nations has formally praised Algeria for its commitment to international climate obligations, specifically highlighting the ambitious targets outlined in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). This commendation came in a letter from Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to Algeria's Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life. The recognition underscores Algeria's proactive role in global efforts to combat climate change.

Stiell's communication lauded Algeria's dedicated implementation of its climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. He particularly noted the country's ambitious goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. This follows Algeria's submission of its NDC to the UNFCCC Secretariat in June 2026, demonstrating its adherence to international agreements.

Beyond the 2035 target, the UN official also acknowledged Algeria's long-term national vision, which extends to 2050. This comprehensive strategy aims to foster a transition towards low-carbon development and enhance the nation's resilience against the impacts of climate change. These efforts are seen as crucial contributions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and reflect the importance of national initiatives in supporting international coordination on environmental sustainability.
