Troops to Niger Secure Algerian Oil Interests

The Algerian Parliament, through unanimous ratification by the Council of the Nation and approval by the National People's Assembly on October 25, formally authorized the deployment of an army unit to a strategic zone in Niger. This decision, stemming from a presidential initiative, is primarily aimed at securing and protecting oil installations within Nigerian territory. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf clarified the mission's peaceful nature, stating it was undertaken at the request of Nigerian authorities and emphasizing that "the security of Niger is part of the security of Algeria."

This strategic deployment underscores Algeria's commitment to safeguarding its economic and security interests in the Sahel region. Former Interior Minister Dahou Ould Kablia supported the decision, noting its role in strengthening Sonatrach's investments in the area. Specifically, the mission targets the protection of the Kafra oil block in northern Niger, located approximately 85 kilometers from the Algerian border, where Sonatrach has maintained a presence since 2025 with an exploration permit covering nearly 23,737 km². Collaborative energy projects are already underway, with Algeria and Niger having launched a new phase of an energy project involving four exploration wells with Sonatrach subsidiary ENAFOR on August 13, 2026, building on previous exploration efforts between 2018 and 2019.

Beyond protecting economic assets, the deployment reinforces existing defensive and security cooperation between Algeria and Niger. This collaboration includes securing their common border and exchanging expertise in counter-terrorism. Previous instances of support include the dispatch of a military transport plane carrying four helicopters, ammunition, and maintenance equipment for Nigerian forces in August, alongside the landing of two Sukhoi Su-30 patrols at Niamey airport later that month, following an attempted mutiny at Air Base 101.
