African, Asian Banks Join Algeria for Railway Project

The Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructures has released specific details regarding the financing plan for the Laghouat-Ghardaïa-El Meniaa-In Salah-Tamanrasset railway line. This comprehensive project will be supported through a strategic allocation of funds, with contributions coming from Algeria’s state budget and international financial institutions. The Ministry's announcement clarifies the roles of various partners in advancing this significant infrastructure development.
The railway project is divided into two distinct sections, each with its dedicated funding source. The initial 495-kilometer stretch, connecting Laghouat to Ghardaïa and El Meniaa, will receive financing from both the African Development Bank (BAD) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Concurrently, the longer 1,080-kilometer segment, which extends from El Meniaa through In Salah to Tamanrasset, will be entirely financed by the Algerian state budget. This structured approach ensures the progression of the expansive railway network.
The Ministry additionally affirmed the ongoing collaboration with international financing institutions regarding other priority railway projects. Discussions between the Islamic Development Bank (BID) and the African Development Bank continue for further financing initiatives. These statements also served to correct previous reports regarding Algeria's alleged withdrawal from a financing arrangement with the Islamic Development Bank, with the Ministry encouraging media outlets to rely on official communications for accurate information on sectoral developments.
