African Business Report Lists Four Algerian Banks Among Continent’s Top 30

Four Algerian financial institutions have secured positions among the top 30 banks in Africa and the top 20 in North Africa, according to the 'African Business 2026' report. These four banks collectively hold a total Tier 1 capital of $11.251 billion, underscoring the substantial strength of Algeria's banking sector within the continent.
Breaking down the rankings, Banque Extérieure d'Algérie (BEA) led the Algerian contingent, placing 10th overall in Africa and 6th in North Africa with a Tier 1 capital of $3.761 billion. It was closely followed by Banque Nationale d'Algérie (BNA), which ranked 11th continentally and 7th regionally, reporting $3.738 billion in Tier 1 capital. Crédit Populaire d'Algérie (CPA) secured the 23rd spot in Africa and 10th in North Africa with $2.218 billion, while Banque de Développement Local (BDL) completed Algeria's presence, ranking 28th in Africa and 13th in North Africa with $1.534 billion. The combined Tier 1 capital of BEA and BNA alone amounted to approximately $7.5 billion, representing nearly two-thirds of the total capital for the four listed Algerian institutions.
This strong showing grants Algeria three positions within the top ten and four within the top twenty institutions in the North African region. The 'African Business' report characterized Algeria as a "main pillar of banking power in North Africa," highlighting its significant financial standing. The ranking methodology, which is based on Tier 1 core capital using data from "Bankers Almanac" and the magazine's internal research, considers capital elements, reserves, and qualified retained earnings to assess a bank's capital base and loss-bearing capacity. While Algerian banking institutions largely concentrate their operations on the domestic market, linking them to national economic activity, their considerable capital size also prompts discussions regarding expanded support for companies in foreign markets.
