Agriculture Sector Contributes 15% to Algerian GDP

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune recently announced that Algeria's agriculture sector contributes nearly 15% to the national gross product. Speaking during his annual address to economic operators, President Tebboune highlighted the sector's increasing role in the economy, a development that underscores ongoing efforts to diversify national income streams away from hydrocarbons.
During the same address, President Tebboune revealed an ambitious target for Algeria to achieve self-sufficiency in grain production before the end of 2027. To further support market stability, particularly for essential commodities, the President instructed the government to establish a state-affiliated institution. This new entity will be tasked with purchasing surplus agricultural produce directly from farmers, facilitating storage, and then distributing it according to market demands, aiming to stabilize prices for items such as potatoes and tomatoes.
President Tebboune further noted that current indicators for the non-hydrocarbon domestic product reflect Algeria's sustained efforts to build a robust and diversified economy less reliant on energy exports. He commended the significant progress made in attracting investments, attributing this success to the recent overhaul of the legal framework. Additionally, the President mentioned the impending operationalization of the "single window" system, set to coincide with the implementation of the 2027 finance law, underscoring the government's commitment to streamlining economic processes and mobilizing national potential for strong economic growth.
