Air Algérie Restores Direct Algiers-Tripoli Flights

Air Algérie has reinstated direct flight services between Algiers and Tripoli, marking a significant return to the Libyan capital's Maatiqa International Airport after a suspension that lasted since 2014. The inaugural flight departed from Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers, initiating a new schedule of two weekly flights.

This resumption is a strategic step for Air Algérie, aligning with the group's objective to expand its international network, particularly across the African continent. According to Syd Ahmed Dekdouk, Air Algérie's Acting Sales and Networks Manager, the initiative aims to reinforce Algeria's standing as a regional air transport hub, linking Africa with global destinations. The newly established route is expected to offer additional options for passenger and cargo transportation.

The renewed air link is anticipated to foster economic and commercial exchanges between Algeria and Libya while strengthening bilateral relations. Libyan Ambassador to Algeria, Saleh Hamma Mohamed Bekeda, emphasized that the flights represent a crucial step towards consolidating the historical and fraternal ties between the two nations, extending beyond commercial benefits to economic, social, and humanitarian dimensions by facilitating movement and communication. Algerian Ambassador to Libya, Abdel Karim Rekaibi, further highlighted that this decision, implemented under the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, responds to growing demand from both Algerian and Libyan communities and businesses, paving the way for enhanced cooperation in economic, commercial, and tourism sectors.

The re-establishment of the Algiers-Tripoli route forms part of a broader strategy by Air Algérie to augment air traffic to and from various African capitals. This includes the recent launch of several other international routes to African and Asian destinations, such as Conakry, Brazzaville, and Lagos. These efforts collectively aim to solidify Algiers International Airport's role as a continental and international connector, supporting Algeria's wider engagement with its African surroundings.
