Green Dam Rehabilitation Receives $99.5 Million Climate Fund Backing

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved a pioneering $99.5 million project aimed at combating desertification and rehabilitating Algeria's Green Dam. This significant initiative includes a $43 million grant from the GCF, complemented by $56.5 million in co-financing from Algeria, marking a substantial investment over its seven-year duration.

This comprehensive program is designed to strengthen climate action and enhance livelihoods across six targeted wilayas. Its core objective is to bolster resilience against the impacts of drought and ongoing desertification, crucial challenges for the affected regions.

The approval underscores international recognition and support for Algeria's environmental strategies. The collaborative funding mechanism, combining substantial external grants with national investment, highlights a concerted effort to safeguard vital ecological assets and secure sustainable development for communities.

With a total mobilization of $99.5 million, the project represents a focused and long-term commitment to environmental protection. Its implementation is expected to yield lasting benefits by restoring degraded landscapes and reinforcing the country's capacity to adapt to climate change, particularly through the revitalization of the Green Dam.
