Algiers Court Issues Death Sentences for Drug Traffickers

The Algiers Criminal Court, operating within the Algiers Judicial Council, has delivered its first death sentences under Law 25-03, which was enacted on July 1, 2025. This new legislation is specifically designed for the prevention of drugs and psychotropic substances, alongside the suppression of their illicit use and trafficking. The recent sentences were pronounced against individuals implicated in cases of cocaine and Pregabalin trafficking, marking a significant step in the nation's efforts to combat serious organized crime.

These judicial proceedings resulted in death sentences for three defendants who were present during the court's hearings, with an additional six individuals receiving similar sentences in absentia. The cases centered on the trafficking of substantial amounts of illicit substances, including 113 kilograms of cocaine and 225,030 pills of Pregabalin. The accused faced a range of charges, including the import, transport, shipping, storage, and possession of hard drugs and psychotropic substances with the intent to sell, all within the framework of an organized criminal group.

The court's actions highlighted the severe nature of these crimes, which were prosecuted for their potential to harm national security and disrupt public order and safety. Further charges brought against the defendants encompassed smuggling, impersonation, illegal immigration, illegal residency, and money laundering. The rigorous application of the new Law 25-03 and the resultant sentences underscore Algeria's firm judicial response and commitment to addressing sophisticated criminal enterprises that threaten societal stability.
