European Powers Target Algiers for Strategic Investments

Algiers is emerging as a significant center of interest for several European economic powers, with delegations from Germany, Italy, and Austria converging on the country in late September. These visits aim to identify opportunities across sectors poised for substantial investment, including energy, hydrogen, agriculture, industry, infrastructure, mobility, and water management. This trend reflects an evolution in European interests, moving beyond traditional trade to focus on securing industrial partnerships and positioning for major Algerian projects.
Germany’s delegation, for example, emphasized hydrogen and related technologies, engaging with Algerian entities such as Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and Cosider Canalisations. Discussions explored cooperation in electrolysis equipment, renewable energies, storage, water treatment, and transport infrastructure, aligning with Algeria's green hydrogen development and the SoutH2 corridor project that links North Africa to Europe. Following this, Italy dispatched a delegation of 15 agricultural mechanization companies, seeking to deepen cooperation in areas like smart irrigation and livestock, building on a notable increase in Italian exports to Algeria. This initiative aims to transition from mere equipment sales to more integrated cooperation, including local production and training.
Austria’s mission rounded out this period of heightened engagement, with a government and economic delegation focusing on green energy, hydrogen, industry, infrastructure, and environmental technologies. Companies like Siemens Mobility Austria participated, reflecting interest in Algeria's expanding railway network. Collectively, these missions highlight a growing perception of the Algerian market not merely as a commercial destination, but as a strategic industrial anchor for European companies seeking access to wider North African and African markets. For Algeria, the priority remains to convert this robust interest into sustainable investments, fostering local capacity, technology transfer, and industrial integration.
