Algeria's Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kaoutar Krikou, called for continued coordination among all relevant sectors and bodies to ensure that national efforts are consistent and complementary, and to strengthen Algeria's readiness for international climate commitments. She made the call during a coordination meeting of the National Climate Committee, which she chaired on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the ministry's headquarters.
The Minister stressed that national action should be built on clear priorities that respond to present and future challenges, as part of preparations for Algeria's participation in the 31st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31).
She also called for closer cooperation with UN bodies, foremost among them the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in supporting national efforts to develop climate planning and strengthen capacities, in support of implementing Algeria's international commitments to combat climate change and adapt to its effects.
The meeting was attended by members of the National Climate Committee and representatives of UN bodies in Algeria. It followed the work of the committee tasked with preparing the National Climate Plan in coordination with UNDP, which serves as a reference framework guiding national climate action and strengthening integration among sectoral policies. It also provided an opportunity to align views on priority issues, particularly after Algeria submitted its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the UNFCCC Secretariat in June 2026 and finalized the National Climate Plan, in fulfillment of the Paris Agreement.
