Enhanced Safety Standards for Radiation Sources Introduced

The Algerian government has introduced new regulations to bolster the safety of ionizing radiation sources and enhance radiation prevention across the nation. Executive Decree No. 26-311, issued on Rabi' II 10, 1448, corresponding to September 22, 2026, was published to establish these comprehensive rules, reflecting a commitment to public health and safety.

The decree specifically outlines the framework for ensuring the secure management of ionizing radiation sources and implementing robust measures for radiation prevention. This executive action is designed to safeguard individuals and the environment from potential hazards associated with such materials, providing a clear set of guidelines for their handling and deployment.

This regulatory advancement is firmly rooted in the Algerian Constitution, drawing authority from Articles 112-5 and 141. Furthermore, the decree integrates provisions from several existing laws pertaining to health prevention, general safety, occupational medicine, labor relations, public service, nuclear activities, and disaster risk prevention within the context of sustainable development. This broad legal foundation underscores a holistic approach to managing and mitigating radiation risks.
