Fiber Optic Connections Top 4 Million Across Algerian Homes

Algeria has officially surpassed four million Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) connections for households. This technological milestone was announced at the Algérie Télécom headquarters by the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Ali Zerrouki. The achievement represents a 75-fold increase in subscribers over six years, demonstrating a significant acceleration in deployment efforts and a major tariff restructuring. In contrast to approximately 53,000 FTTH connections in June 2020, the nation's network expanded steadily, reaching 1.08 million by late 2023, 1.7 million by late 2024, and 2.6 million by December 2025, culminating in four million connections by early October 2026.

The year 2026 alone saw an unprecedented pace of expansion, with 1.4 million households connected within its first nine months. This large-scale deployment highlights the increased mobilization of engineering and deployment capabilities nationwide. Concurrently, the accessibility of high-speed internet has been dramatically improved through a proactive pricing strategy. The monthly subscription cost for a minimum speed of 100 Mbps has been reduced by 76%, falling from 9,999 DZD in 2020 to 2,400 DZD today, making high-speed internet financially accessible to a larger segment of Algerian households and encouraging widespread adoption of online services.

This digital transformation aligns with the strategic vision initiated by the Presidency of the Republic to modernize basic infrastructure. Public authorities view this expanded network as a foundational element for digitalized public services, economic diversification, and the nation's digital sovereignty. Beyond mere figures, the widespread availability of fiber optics fosters conditions conducive to university education, enhances the competitiveness of businesses, and simplifies citizens' access to administrative services. It also prepares the national ecosystem for integrating emerging technologies, including cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

The sector's roadmap projects exceeding 4.4 million subscriptions before the end of 2026, with an additional 300,000 homes to be connected in the first quarter of 2027. This growth coincides with the final stages of migrating older copper networks to fiber optics, supported by continuous enhancements to international bandwidth and national backbones. The Minister acknowledged the critical contributions of Algérie Télécom teams, local authorities, and the 4,400 subcontracting companies involved in this effort, noting this current stage is a stepping stone to leverage raw connectivity into a driver for economic development and equal opportunities across Algeria.
