France Requests Greater Algerian Oil and Gas Supplies

France has formally requested Algeria to increase its shipments of oil and liquefied natural gas. This urgent appeal, reported by a global energy platform citing private sources, underscores Algeria's significant position as a dependable and secure source of hydrocarbon supplies, particularly for Europe due to its geographical proximity. The request highlights France's efforts to secure its energy needs amidst various domestic circumstances.
Algeria possesses the capability to increase its oil shipments to France. While existing contractual obligations to other partners may currently affect the immediate availability of additional liquefied natural gas, France remains a primary recipient of Algerian energy resources. Recent figures indicate a rise in Algerian oil exports to the French market, reaching 138,000 barrels per day last April, a notable increase from 43,000 barrels per day the previous March.
This appeal for energy supplies marks the second time within the current year that France has sought assistance from Algeria for critical provisions. Last summer, France also approached Algeria for substantial quantities of air conditioners to address an unprecedented heatwave. Leading Algerian companies in this sector successfully fulfilled these requests, exporting considerable volumes in multiple batches. Such operations have been recognized as an African economic model, fostering a new regional vision that enables African companies to expand into European markets, leveraged by their geographical closeness.
