French-Trained Algerian Targets Oran for Ostrich Farming

An Algerian national residing in France is pursuing specialized training in ostrich farming with a specific goal: to establish an ostrich farm in Oran, Algeria. Currently a train controller with SNCF, the individual is participating in a unique program offered by the Oisellerie agricultural high school in La Couronne, Charente, in southwestern France. This initiative seeks to introduce a novel agricultural sector to Algeria and diversify local food options.
The training, which costs €770, provides participants with comprehensive knowledge of ostrich farming. It covers various aspects of the activity, including regulatory frameworks, equipment utilization, breeding techniques, and the commercialization of ostrich-derived products. The curriculum, described as unique in France, highlights potential markets for eggs, feathers, skins, fat, and meat, and attracts individuals undergoing professional retraining.
The Algerian candidate intends to apply this expertise in Oran, focusing on developing an operation to supply the local catering market. The project aims to capitalize on the growth of hotels and restaurants in the region, offering ostrich meat as a new culinary option beyond traditional chicken and beef. This venture is set to contribute to Oran's economic diversification and enhance its gastronomic offerings, tapping into a niche but promising agricultural sector.
